Are you a Social worker/cunsellor? Follow eight role:

CATALYST/DEVELOPER
The adviser with the vision of what the effective organization would ideally be like to work in. In fact the Catalyst/Developer is a bit of an idealist at heart, his/her ideas and behaviour are an inspiration to line management and a stimulus to the development of new and imaginative ways of determining what the organization should be like and, in particular, how its employees should be treated.

INVOLVER/FACILITATOR
Best when working to help groups clarify their values and processes, and when acting as 'honest broker' bringing together conflicting points of view and reducing unproductive conflict within teams. Congenial and diplomatic, the Involver/Facilitator ensures that all opinions are heard, problems are confronted and that genuine consensus is sought and often achieved.

LISTENER/COUNSELLOR
Patient, responsive, sympathetic and tactful, this adviser is particularly good in one-to-one situations, and is often the best one to go to with personal problems and difficulties. Rather than giving ready-made solutions or quick fixes, the Lister/Counsellor helps his or her individual client to work through both the feelings and the facts in finding a way forward.

SUPPORTER/HELPER
The Supporter/Helper is the person best able to give practical advice, assistance and support in cases where simply understanding the problem is not enough. With a strong desire to help those experiencing significant change at work, and with appropriate methods, techniques and information to be able to do so, such advisers come into their own at times of major organizational upheaval.

RESEARCHER/ANALYST
Providing a support service of high quality, this role is probably the one upon whom management can most depend for the accurate handling of information, and/or the development of associated policies, systems and procedures. Faced with the requirement of more detailed work, the Researcher/Analyst will usually provide a service relied upon for its precision and punctuality.

INSTRUCTOR/ENFORCER
Given policies, rules, process and procedures to be implemented, this adviser makes them happen. Efficient, organized, systematic and practical, the Instructor/Enforcer makes sure that the necessary knowledge and/or skills are first of all obtained by the staff, and then used correctly. Often also quick-witted and pragmatic, this adviser may sometimes be a strong negotiator on behalf of the 'management side'.

LECTURER/DIRECTOR
The adviser most likely to identify with the senior management team and to be concerned with the more strategic issues. Tough, logical and knowledgeable, the Lecturer/Director has a good idea of where the organization should be going and the best way for it to get there. Being so sure s/he skilfully uses behind-the-scenes influence to bring about the necessary changes.

THINKER/CHALLENGER
Independent minded and perhaps a bit theoretical, the Thinker/Challenger readily identifies faults in current practices and is happy to point them out. The bane of managers and staff comfortable with the status quo, this adviser is outspoken in challenging 'sacred cows' and highly creative in identifying paths to new and better ways.
